We believe in leaving the mountains cleaner than we find them. To realize this, we offer our staff a financial incentive for every kilogram of waste extracted during our time on trail. We also collaborate with local communities and conservation organizations to promote conservation awareness that results in cleaner, healthier ecosystems.
Our team members have spent years exploring Asia's most remote mountain regions. Through this we have procured some of the most remarkable sections of trail in the world, all of which is entirely unknown to the international eye. We are very thrilled to share some of these unique destinations with you.
At Great Goat Expeditions we admire the tenacious character of the rural populations that call the Central Asian mountain ecosystems home, and are fascinated by the different strategies that these peoples have adopted in order to thrive in such conditions. We offer our guests a deeper understanding of these unique ways of life.
The Snow Leopard Track is a provisional 15,000km network of alpine trails linking Nepal to Kyrgyzstan, created by Ian Roth - Co-Founder and mountain guide at Great Goat Expeditions. The route connects the chain of Asia's great mountain ranges, through the Himalaya, Karakorum, Pamir, Hindu-Kush and the Tien-Shan. When complete, it will form the longest continuous network of purely alpine trails in the world.
The core route involves no fewer than 35 technical mountaineering passes, and culminates at the zenith of Peak Lenin (7132m). At Great Goat Expeditions, all of our routes are inspired by the Snow Leopard Track.

Central Asia is one of the safest regions in the world to visit. The nomadic lifestyle precipitates an exceptionally warm and hospitable culture, and guests are often met by locals with incredible generosity - particularly in the mountains.
All of our itineraries require hikers to possess a moderate fitness baseline, with our daily hiking metrics typically between 6 to 15 km and 400 to 1000 meters of net elevation gain over a day of walking. Before flying, we recommend keeping active with whatever choice of aerobic exercise you like to do, and going on a few longer hikes on the weekends with a 10kg backpack in order to adjust to the sensation of carrying weight. If you can do this then you should have no problem during your trip! If you’re worried about your knees or joints, consider throwing in the occasional lower body resistance training at the gym.
Terrain in Central Asia can at times be challenging, with sections of clear trail occasionally interrupted by moraine and scree, open tundra, slope marsh, snow, and other variable surfaces. That said, our itineraries are specifically designed with flexibility in mind, so as to accommodate trekkers of almost all fitness levels.
If you’re worried about your fitness or how to prepare best, just let us know! We’re happy to jump on a call and talk you through what to expect in your trip, and give you recommendations on how to optimize your preparation.
Yes, when you meet with one of our guides we will complete a comprehensive gear check for all trekkers to ensure everyone is fully equipped for the upcoming trip. If you are missing some important equipment or gear then we will be able to provide this by rental or alternatively, you can purchase high quality gear from a variety of legitimate outdoor gear shops in the cities.
At Great Goat Expeditions, its our mission to make your trip as smooth and comfortable as possible. That's why, for all of our expeditions we have arranged horse porters, alongside a horseman to offset the weight on your backs.
All you will need to carry is personal clothing, snacks and valuables. Leave the heavy stuff for us!
We reccommend bringing a 40-50 litre backpack, this will be more than adequate for our trips, and you shouldn't need to carry any more than 7-9kg.
