About Great Goat Expeditions

Our Story

Great Goat Expeditions was founded by three independent adventure travellers, Ian Roth, Sam Clark, and Johanna Fritz, whose paths came together in Kyrgyzstan in 2023.

Each of us arrived in the region driven by the same curiosity: to fully immerse ourselves in untamed wilderness far off the beaten path. We each spent extended time in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, exploring backcountry routes that seldom saw tourists and immersing ourselves in the local nomadic cultures of the Tien-Shan.

When we finally met, it became clear that we shared the same view of what adventure travel should be. We were less interested in well-known routes and the standard tourist trail, and more drawn to the vast, wild spaces beyond them. Rugged peaks, high passes, and rarely visited regions held far more meaning for us than crowded trails.

Central Asia remains one of the world’s most off-beat regions, but even here tourism has begun to follow predictable patterns. A small number of locations now receive the majority of visitors, while immense areas of extraordinary terrain remain largely unexplored.

This contrast shaped the idea of Great Goat Expeditions.

Kyrgyzstan is a country defined by mountains, dominated by the Tien-Shan and Pamir Ranges. Within these mountains exist vast networks of shepherds’ trails, nomadic passages, and communities that carry ancient traditions through these remote regions.

Great Goat Expeditions exists to take people into these places. We design off-beat, small-group trekking itineraries that prioritise remoteness, cultural connection, and time spent moving through the landscape at a natural pace.

For us, adventure is not about taking the easiest option. It is about exploration, carefully pioneering routes through remote frontiers that few have experienced before.

Great Goat Expeditions & The Snow Leopard Track

The Snow Leopard Track, created by our Co-Founder and Mountain Guide Ian Roth, is the world’s longest thru-hike, stretching 11,300 km across Asia’s great mountain ranges, from Kyrgyzstan to Nepal.

At its core, The Snow Leopard Track is guided by a single philosophy: routes should emphasise the journey, the landscapes, and the cultures along the way, rather than taking the most direct or logistically convenient path. This philosophy is at the heart of Great Goat Expeditions. Our itineraries are inspired by the Snow Leopard Track, prioritising wilderness, cultural immersion, and meaningful exploration over convenience or speed.

Traveling along the Snow Leopard Track, and on the expeditions we design inspired by it, is not about racing through mountains or ticking off checkpoints. It is about experiencing the land at your own pace, connecting with the people who call these remote regions home, and discovering landscapes and cultures few outsiders ever see. Every step is deliberate, every route chosen to maximise immersion, challenge, and wonder.

Navigating remote mountain ranges like the Snow Leopard Track is challenging, even for experienced trekkers. Great Goat Expeditions takes the complexity out of the equation. We carefully plan every route, coordinate logistics, and provide expert guidance, so you can focus on the journey itself, safely exploring regions that would be difficult or impossible to navigate on your own.
